Your diet: inside + out

12 July 2023

Understanding the nutritional value of food obviously has many positive benefits to the function and the performance of our bodies. Eating artificial or heavily processed food can leave us feeling sluggish and meh, whereas fresh fruit and veggies can give your body a boost of energy and vitality.

Considering our skin is our largest organ, it’s unsurprising that it too is so easily affected by our diet. Our philosophy at Skin Juice has always been ‘to feed the skin like a healthy diet feeds the body’.

Our delicious skin care blends are packed full of rich and powerful nutrients and ingredients, many of which you probably also enjoy as food.

The role of a face cream in your routine is to protect the skin from losing hydration while supporting the skin’s natural barrier to protect it against pollution, irritation and environmental drying. So of course face creams and moisturisers are an important step in your skincare routine, particularly in the morning.

Face creams contain emulsifiers that bind the oil and water molecules and are designed to be retained on the skin’s surface for protection. This is fantastic throughout the day but at night this barrier effect will inhibit the skin’s natural functions.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
At night while you sleep, the skin repairs and rebalances itself by releasing natural secretions (such as oils) to reinforce its’ protective barrier. It’s therefore important not to use anything on the skin that might block or inhibit this natural process.

To nourish your skin at night we recommend using a face oil or oil balm. Oils and balms are free from emulsifiers, ensuring your pores remain clear so that the skin’s oil secretions continue to flow uninhibited at night. They also repair and replace the lost oils on the surface of the skin, helping you to wake up to a soft dewy glow in the morning.

Sensitivity explained:

Sensitivity in skin doesn't always present as obviously red, inflamed or irritated skin.

When sensitive skin is balanced, the outer layer of our skin (called the lipid barrier) is intact, and inflammation and irritation should all be under control. If it becomes compromised that's when we notice changes - like redness, tight skin, shiny skin, excess oil or breakouts.

These changes are a consequence of the sensitivity. For example, your skin may have been stripped of its natural protective oils which then in turn causes it to produce more oil and lead to breakouts.

By treating the sensitivity first and working to get the skin balanced your skin function improves and a lot of these other signs such as breakouts start to reduce in appearance as well.
